Score
Technical Info
Special requirements for concert programming and instrument:
'preface' from "Three Studies for microtonal piano"
- A grand piano.
- Approx. 6 minutes is required both for the detuning and when retuning the instrument.
Use of microtonal techniques
A mix of all these techniques may in fact be heard by f.ex. listening to the first 10 bars of the 1st movement (track 1), or the first interlude (track 2).
- Unison string course scordatura
The C3, D4, A4, F5 are detuned as shown in the Preface. - Non-unison string course scordatura
Certain strings of the C#3 and C#5 string courses are detuned as shown in the Preface.
One may note that there is a mistake in the performance notes, explained further below. - Use of the una corda pedal
Buene uses una corda in combination with non-unison string course scordatura to enable changes between a clean sound (the 2 strings to the right sounding in unison) and a more “dirty” sound (all strings sounding) - on the same key.
While composing, he however imagined that “una corda” meant that only one string would be sounding.
In order to have the option of a clean sound (when depressing the u.c. pedal), adjustments therefore had to be made:
For the two string courses where he had asked for 3 different pitches, we decided to detune only the leftmost of the 3 strings, letting the middle string maintain its standard tuning.
