Piano multiphonics
On the piano, I define a ‘multiphonic’ as a sound consisting of more than one clearly audible harmonic deriving from a single node of a string/string course.
It is in fact a subcategory of harmonics, as they are 'multi-harmonics'. A multiphonic node is usually most clear when found in between nodes of lower harmonics that are close to each other on the string.
It is possible to prepare an object to make a multiphonic ring, but this will fall into the 'Prepared piano' category.
In most cases, multiphonics are clearly microtonal sounds, because they combine middle/high range harmonics, which in the context of a weak fundamental, sound ‘out-of-tune’ with one another.
In addition to this, they might deviate even more from harmonic tuning, due to the stiffness in the piano.
